Deutsche Telekom and France Telecom have unveiled “Everything Everywhere” (E2), the new name for their combined UK mobile operators, Orange and T-mobile. The new company, which received regulatory approval in March, has some 30 million subscribers, making it the biggest mobile network operator in the UK, pushing O2 into second spot with Vodafone third and 3UK fourth.

Everything Everywhere is expected to post pro forma 2009 sales of £7.57bn and earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation of £1.38bn.

New CEO Tom Alexander will head 16,500 employees and more than 700 retail outlets. E2 will be officially integrated on 1 July, but will retain the two brands for marketing purposes.

Super-network

Alexander said he planned to create a single “super-network” that will give bigger and better coverage for customers, with a smaller impact on the environment. Roaming across both networks was due later this year, at no additional cost to the customer.

Alexander said the UK was on the brink of a multimedia mobile communications revolution. “Multimedia phones have already started to change the way our customers access the world, for entertainment, education, information, wherever they are, whenever they want,” he said.

He said the company’s new coverage and scale enabled it to “ramp up” offers to the business market.

With an exclusive Design Night on the evening of the first press day at Auto China in Beijing (April 23rd to May 2nd 2010), BMW provided an in-depth insight into its design philosophy and development strategy. The program of the BMW Design Night was modular in structure and presented extensive background information on BMW’s design culture.

In addition to highlighting the long versions of the BMW 5 Series developed specially for the Chinese market, the main focus was on an elegant 4-door vehicle with striking dynamic proportions: the BMW Concept Gran Coupé.

The concept study on display was meant to symbolise the design expertise of BMW. The BMW Concept Gran Coupé concentrates the fundamental values of the brand. Its body design was both dynamic and elegant and has a certain affinity to the BMW Concept CS of 2007.

The concept shows the classic features of all BMW coupes: the long wheelbase, the vaulted bonnet with forward-pointing lines, the set-back greenhouse, the flat silhouette, the coupe-style roof line and the short front overhang reflect the dynamic potential of the vehicle.

In the BMW Concept Gran Coupé, BMW presents the vision of a 4-door vehicle which combines the exclusivity of a Gran Turismo with the fascination of a high-performance sports car. The design of the concept study underscores the expertise of the BMW brand in the development of vehicles with a distinctive sporty character which offer space for more than two occupants.

The 4-door vehicle clearly signals a high level of dynamic performance with its elegant, flat and coupe-like proportions. Stretching the entire length of the vehicle and measuring almost 5 metres, flowing lines dominate the design.

The front section is defined by the BMW kidney grille characteristic of the brand. The kidney grille of the BMW Concept Gran Coupé has a flat appearance, with an asymmetrical side view. The central section with the kidney grille is formally separated from other BMW icons such as the headlights and air inlets. The clarity of the LED front lights highlights the vehicle’s precision and premium aspirations. The air inlet runs back a long way into the side section making the front section appear particularly wide. All elements of the front section appear to merge to form a single, elegantly curved movement.

The sporty, flat silhouette provides an impressive body height of just under 1.40 metres. This makes the BMW Concept Gran Coupé up to 100 millimetres flatter than the BMW 5 Series or the BMW 7 Series Sedan. The roof line tapers off gently into the rear, thereby elongating the vehicle’s proportions. The forward-tilted shark nose visually extends the bonnet and creates characteristic BMW proportions with its forward-pointing dynamism. This stretched character is also highlighted by the side lines, where there is a deliberate avoidance of the typical sill line. The flat proportions make the window graphics appear extremely narrow and dynamic at the same time. Another BMW design icon, the Hofmeister kink, is especially strikingly formed – additionally emphasising the exclusive character of the vehicle. The frameless doors give the BMW Concept Gran Coupé a modern character since the glass surfaces appear to merge seamlessly without being interrupted by columns.

At the rear, only design elements such as the lights and tailpipe trim appear to be visible at first sight. The entire rear section appears slimmer and lighter at the centre, though still exuding power and dynamic performance since the volume is reinforced towards the sides. The L-shaped light banks feature a slight, almost subtle curve and the entire design of the lines and surfaces highlights the vehicle’s elegant overall appearance. The third brake light, positioned in the rear window, is also fitted with LED technology. It takes up the kink in the roof and illuminates the entire width of the rear window. The powerfully flared wheel arches above the rear axle also highlight the sporty character of the BMW Concept Gran Coupé.

Another highly sporty and also elegant feature is the rim concept in which the individual spokes extend deep into the centre of the rim towards the hub, giving the rim a striking three-dimensional quality. The spokes themselves are not solid but relief-milled, giving them a visual lightness.

The sculptural shaping style characteristic of the entire body design of the BMW Concept Gran Coupé permits a unique interaction between concave and convex surfaces. It also enables the light to be selectively reflected and channeled. Thus the exterior mirrors integrated in the window shaft appear very light, blending harmoniously into the side view. The BMW Concept Gran Coupé is a further development of the classic design of a notchback sedan in which the individual body sections merge harmoniously into a flat, elongated and at the same time dynamic overall image. The effect of this 4-door vehicle derives not just from specific highlights but from its overall appearance, which authentically reflects its character.

Heesen Yachts have just recently unveiled a revolutionary 65-metre all-aluminium design based on the Fast Displacement Hull Form (FDHF), whose tank testing has been completed at the Wolfson Unit in Southampton (UK). Developed by Dutch naval architects Van Oossanen & Associates, the Heesen 6500 FDHF is an innovative concept that increases the overall performance of the yacht.

Tank tests have shown that in comparison with traditional hard chine and round bilge hulls, FDHF improves the efficiency of the vessel by around 30%. The slenderness and special form of the hull results in a very low wave profile over the entire speed range, while also improving its sea-keeping and maneuverability. As a consequence, it has a very positive impact on the cost of running the yacht, while also lowering its environmental impact in terms of engine emissions.

The exterior design of this 65-metre vessel is by Dutch designer Frank Laupman of Omega Architects. Other leading international designers have also been asked to create alternative proposals for the exterior styling.

Omega’s design clearly shows the Heesen bloodline, while invigorating it with the aggressive appearance of a racing car. Notable design features include a touch-and-go helipad forward and a semi-shaded area surrounding the swimming pool on the main deck. On the lower deck is a vast beach club area, whose design incorporates bar, sauna and hammam. In addition to the large transom platform, there is a side balcony that opens from the hull to the port side to provide the owner and his guests with an even closer connection to the sea.

Heesen Yachts will present this innovative 65-metre design to the yachting community on September 22nd 2010 at the Monaco Yacht Show.

Chevrolet – like many other brands – has made a major commitment to providing world-class, fuel-efficient vehicles to its customers around the world. In recent months, through GM’s Shanghai GM joint venture, Chevrolet has introduced the fuel-efficient Cruze and New Sail in China. It will also introduce the Volt electric vehicle with extended range capability in 2011.

In preparation for the Volt’s arrival, Chevrolet introduced the Volt MPV5 electric concept at the Beijing Motor Show. The five-passenger multi-purpose crossover concept demonstrates the potential of the Voltec propulsion system by utilizing the same foundation as the Volt, for gas- and tailpipe emissions-free electric driving.

Maximizing Efficiency and Style

The styling of the Volt MPV5 concept borrows design and aerodynamic cues from the Chevrolet Volt. The front fascia is amongst the most aerodynamic of any crossover thanks to its closed grille and aero-optimized lower air dam, both of which help improve fuel efficiency. A full-underbody belly pan, along with rocker claddings, creased tail lamps and specially designed blades on the rear quarter, also help the Volt MPV5 concept cut through the wind with ease. The intense focus on improved aerodynamics enables greater all-electric range.

The exterior of the Volt MPV5 concept isn’t solely about efficiency. Its Sonic Blue Metallic paint provides a contemporary appeal, while the dual skylight panels and 19-inch Volt-inspired wheels build the Volt MPV5 concept’s sporty credentials.

“The Volt MPV5 concept takes the efficient design of the Chevrolet Volt and adapts it to the family vehicle crossover segment. It’s immediately recognizable as a true member of the Chevrolet family,” said Bob Boniface, Director of GM North America Crossover Exterior Design, whose team worked in conjunction with members of GM’s design studio in Australia on the Volt MPV5 concept.

The Volt MPV5 concept’s dimensions provide added passenger comfort. While the 2,760-mm wheelbase of the Volt MPV5 concept is a mere 15 mm longer than the wheelbase of the Chevrolet Volt, its body is 181 mm longer (4,585 mm), 73 mm wider (1,871 mm) and 182 mm taller (1,612 mm) than the Volt.

Inside, the Volt MPV5 concept adopts the Volt’s center stack and gauge cluster along with its striking two-tone leather seats. Thanks to the Volt MPV5 concept’s size, passenger comfort doesn’t take a backseat. Typical for Chevrolet crossovers, the Volt MPV5 concept’s seating position allows for maximum comfort and flexibility, including improved entry and egress.

When it comes to cargo, the Volt MPV5 concept carries on the crossover tradition thanks to its flip-and-fold second row seating, which provides up to 1,764.1 liters of cargo space with the seats folded and 863.7 liters of space behind the second row.

Voltec Power Boosts Green Credentials

The Volt MPV5 concept utilizes the same Voltec propulsion system found in the Chevrolet Volt, including the added capability of an engine generator to extend the driving range and eliminate “range anxiety.” A 16-kWh T-shaped lithium-ion battery pack powers the electric drive unit.

The flexibility of the Voltec system enables the Volt MPV5 concept to meet full vehicle speed and acceleration requirements while driving the vehicle and its five occupants up to 51.5 km on pure electric propulsion. This is double what the average urban commuter in China travels each day. When the battery is depleted, a 1.4-liter engine generator sustains the battery charge and provides up to 482 km of electric propulsion.

“The Volt MPV5 concept demonstrates the flexibility of the Voltec propulsion system, which can produce enough electric power to propel a range of vehicles. from a compact sedan like the Volt to a crossover like the Volt MPV5 concept,” said Doug Parks, Global Vehicle Line Executive and Global Vehicle Chief Engineer for Electric Vehicles at GM.

“Rapidly growing demand for personal transportation across China is creating new environmental and energy security challenges,” said Kevin Wale, President and Managing Director of the GM China Group. “GM is committed to finding and adopting solutions, which include the electrification of the automobile. The world premiere of the Volt MPV5 concept in Beijing demonstrates GM’s desire to make China a global focus of its advanced technology strategy.”

GM continues to advance electrification in China through research and development. It has launched the China Automotive Energy Research Center (CAERC) in Beijing. The venture with SAIC and Tsinghua University is developing a comprehensive automotive energy strategy for China. The GM China Science Lab, which opened last November, is carrying out advanced automotive-related research, including battery development. In March, GM introduced the EN-V (Electric Networked-Vehicle) concepts in Shanghai. A centerpiece of the SAIC-GM Pavilion at World Expo 2010 Shanghai, EN-V embodies GM’s vision for personal urban mobility in 2030. In addition, GM is supporting its Shanghai GM joint venture’s “Drive to Green” strategy, which is focused on developing green products, supporting green manufacturing and undertaking a green responsibility.

Kathleen Anne, the second yacht in Feadship’s pioneering SL39 design platform, is the very definition of a floating private retreat. Built by Koninklijke De Vries Scheepsbouw in Aalsmeer, in the Netherlands, she features a modern exterior from the boards of Guido de Groot and an elegant contemporary interior by Bannenberg & Rowell Design.

Kathleen Anne is a full displacement world cruiser with a steel hull, aluminum superstructure and a top speed of around 14 knots. Her British owners were very involved in every stage of the project, leveraging on their previous experience on board a Feadship and various other superyachts they have owned and chartered over a distinguished sailing career.

The goal was to create a home-away-at sea for the owners and their children, who range from early teens to late twenties in age. Providing fun and facilities for a diverse age group with varied tastes demands a yacht of considerable flexibility. Unlike some super yachts where, for example, the main lounge is reserved only for formal occasions, every part of Kathleen Anne has been optimised for regular use.

The ability to transform the guest suites into VIP staterooms also means that smaller parties are very well catered for. And because the owners enjoy exploring northern hemisphere locations, Kathleen Anne is fully equipped for every climatic eventuality. A Heinen & Hopman single-duct air-conditioning plant cools or heats all accommodation spaces as required. This system eliminates the need for separate fan coil units in each room, frees up space, and radically enhances the views from the large windows.

Another very smart centralized technical feature on board Kathleen Anne is her state-of-theart audio-visual system, comprised of LINN and Kaleidescape components. All on board entertainment sources have been integrated into one simple-to-control system for multiple users throughout the yacht.

Kathleen Anne has an elegant contemporary exterior style. Her forward bulwark has been drawn high to reflect the overall lines of the boat, while the bow slopes downwards to give a faster look than one might expect from a ‘typical’ classic Feadship.

“A 39-meter yacht with three decks can have awkward proportions, especially if you respect all the heights,” explains designer Guido de Groot. “It is therefore crucial that the design emphasizes the length of the boat. This is why we chose to have lots of fine design lines going from aft to forward. All the surfaces have small steps to indicate lines that accentuate the length of the boat.”

“In addition, around the bridge deck lounge is a fashion plate that covers part of the windows. This gives further emphasis to the sportiness of the boat and the sleek overall lines. Another important feature is the way all exterior lines have a connection with each other: For example, the lines of the arch construction are at precisely the same angle as the fashion plate.”

De Groot worked closely together with Feadship De Voogt Naval Architects to ensure all the lines remained exceptionally crisp. “Although Kathleen Anne is a very stylish yacht, this has not been achieved at the expense of interior space and she remains a very voluminous yacht.”

Another party involved in creating this impressive exterior aesthetic was Bannenberg & Rowell Design, especially with the deployment of the light grey color in the superstructure recesses and behind the fashion plates. The company from London also took care of the exterior logos and name, although Bannenberg & Rowell Design’s main responsibility was, of course, the interior.

“The owners are charming people to work with as they are very decisive and clear on their requirements,” says Dickie Bannenberg. “They wanted a crisp but homely feel with lots of loose furniture specifically tailored to individual spaces and their use.”

The overall look of Kathleen Anne‘s interior succeeds in combining a calm and tailored approach with an inviting ambience. “We have generated a somewhat masculine feel,” adds Bannenberg. “This was achieved by offsetting handsome walnut timbers with contrasting white oak and intricate highlights in high gloss dark rosewood and macassar ebony. Similarly restrained marbles such as white and grey Calacatta and brown Emperador have been deployed in the bathrooms. Bringing all this together with the expert craftsmen at the De Vries yard was a genuine pleasure and the entire project ran like clockwork.”

A tour of Kathleen Anne

The entrance lobby has a parquet floor in bands of oak and walnut, with a sculptural staircase in stainless steel, oak and leather that connects all three decks. The benefits and flexibility of the loose-furniture layout are immediately seen in the main lounge. This is used far more often on Kathleen Anne than is the case on many yachts when the main saloon can have more of a walk-through role.

As the primary social area, the lounge offers two distinctive and comfortable seating areas to port and starboard, each centered over a rug that is integral to the overall carpet on board. The overall colour scheme is knocked back and neutral with punches and accents of colour from the cushions, for instance, and the pair of bright red-top chairs. An upholstered chest acts as a table on one side with a round pedestal table opposite at a comfortable height for breakfast, coffee or drinks. A flatscreen television is concealed beneath one of the portside windows.

Two high gloss buffet cabinets with white Calcutta marble tops house china and glass and serve as a visual partition with the dining area forward. The carved limestone sculptures on these dressers are part of the owner’s interesting collection of artworks that complement the decorative envelope throughout the yacht. All the sculptures on board are by John Farnham, who was an assistant to Henry Moore.

Above the sculptures here in the main lounge are esoteric Japanese photographs of ponds and lilies on hand-laid rice paper, which juxtapose nicely with the boldly coloured Etched Lines lithographs on the forward wall by Ian Davenport. The owners deliberately chose the open plan lounge and dining table arrangement, without any form of divider or partition. The bespoke oak and nickel dining table rests on a rug with a free-form pattern inspired by the owners’ herd of Shorthorn cattle.

The refined owner’s stateroom includes an anteroom/study with exceptional exterior views and a full-beam bedroom with a walk-in dressing room. Style-wise the stateroom offers a variation on the walnut and inset nickel detailing, which continues as a theme wood with the paler oak outboard. The middle of those panels is inset with bone coloured linen, a contemporary take on the more traditional fielded panel detailing.

The first part of the bedroom contains a low coffee table with two low easy chairs. While the impressive bed looks completely freestanding to give a less built-in feel, there is actually plenty of storage underneath. Carefully chosen black and white photography by Jason Langer hangs on bone-coloured linen paneling, set within walnut joinery.

To the right of the television is the door to the bathroom, which has echoes of a grand British hotel with chunky lights, white marble tops and splashes of teak and walnut. In addition to a nice bath there is a large walk-in shower and a separate toilet.

The bridge deck

Flexibility is integral to the concept of the bridge deck lounge, which resembles an – albeit highly sophisticated – intimate family living room. With the aft doors flung open, the aft area forms part of the outdoor-in ‘beach club’ lounge during the day, while in the evenings the focus lies on watching movies and playing on a cool games cube in front of the huge 50-inch TV.

The teak floor features a unique pattern of wide planks, with walnut and pale oak inset in thin strips: This gives a fresh expression of the traditional teak decking running down both sides of the room. A two-section coffee table in macassar ebony and faux shagreen nestles between four inviting armchairs. Like the breakfast table/card games table on the portside and its accompanying chairs, nothing is fixed in place and the lounge can be arranged in many different ways to suit the occasion.

The aft area of the bridge deck is surprisingly large for a 39-meter yacht, with the option to create a lovely shaded area above the sofa. Thanks to a removable central leaf, the table can be extended to accommodate up to ten people. An unusual palette of stone-coloured fabrics makes this a distinctive and peaceful place.

The wheelhouse contains an integrated bridge with five screens, central programming and a large elevated sofa. It is a conventional but very handsome area, with lots of walnut and dark leather.

The lower deck

Kathleen Anne has four guest suites on the lower deck. All the bedrooms have been paneled in broad planks of white oak, blended with simple cream fabric upholstery. Deeply fluted plinths and chunky macassar ebony footboards distinguish the beds, all fitted with Savoir mattresses. The footboards with inlaid metal details and fluted kickboards in the footboards offer a slight hint of art deco, reinforced by some late-1930s British linocuts by Cyril Power (Skaters, The Runners, The Giant Racer and Lifts). The other art pieces featured are Luca Missoni’s Moon photos.

The aft guest cabins have double beds, one of which converts into a sofa. Sliding back the central bulkhead, the two suites can be configured into one full-beam VIP stateroom suite with a separate lounge containing an L-shaped sofa.

To maximize the space in the four guest bathrooms, each is fitted with swiveling cabinets that are mirror-faced one side and which provide storage for bathroom products on the other. All these bathrooms are finely detailed in walnut, teak and fresh marble. Slats of walnut in the door panel with a linen backdrop add class here and throughout the yacht.

The sun deck

While offering plenty of space for those who do love to bathe in water or sun, the shading facilities are also one of the most ingenious aspects of the sun deck. The cantilevered umbrellas above the Jacuzzi are made of stainless steel and sailcloth, and each unit can be folded up and unplugged. Here as elsewhere on Kathleen Anne, people have a wealth of choices at any time of the night or day. And that is a rare if not entirely unique virtue for a 39- meter yacht.

SAIC recently unveiled the MG “Zero” concept car, designed by the Shanghai Auto’s MG Studio, based in Birmingham in the UK, and lead by Anthony Williams, director of the global design team. The concept is yet another example to show case the new MG “personality, temperament, and creativity” of the brand.

From the outset the team targeted the world’s 18-28 year-old “pan 90″ consumer group, for a new generation of consumers. The MG Zero has been designed to meet the “personality, novelty, fun,” of this new consumer demand.

The exterior design further reinstates the form language seen on previous MG concepts with the front end being particularly characterful – if not a little Ford like. The overal design of the exterior, however, is a little generic.

The Interior design on the other hand is both fashionable and has a high sense of technological content, as well as being well designed and executed.
